High potential and gifted education

Some students learn faster and more easily than others. These students may shine in creativity, thinking, leadership or sport.

High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) at Quaama Public School

At Quaama Public School, we are committed to identifying and nurturing the high potential of every learner. In our calm, structured and supportive environment, students are encouraged to extend themselves academically, creatively, socially and physically. Our teachers bring deep knowledge of how students learn and are skilled in differentiated and explicit teaching practices that ensure all learners continue to progress, deepen their understanding and broaden their knowledge.

Students demonstrating advanced skills in specific subjects have opportunities for curriculum acceleration and extension, including working across grades to access content that matches their level of readiness. This flexibility allows high-performing learners to be challenged appropriately while maintaining strong social connections within our small rural school setting.

Our students also have access to a wide range of enrichment pathways beyond the classroom. These include representative sport avenues, gala sports days and Knockout (KO) tournaments, which offer opportunities for talented athletes to showcase and refine their abilities at local, regional and state levels. Students with strong interest or potential in science and technology can represent the school in STEM events within our school and across the broader region.

We proudly partner with the Bournda Environmental Education Centre to provide access to specialised HPGE programs that extend students’ thinking, environmental understanding and leadership skills. Additionally, our membership in the Sapphire Coast Learning Community (SCLC) enables students to participate in the beginner band ensemble, where musically talented students can develop foundational skills and collaborate with peers from neighbouring schools.

Many of these opportunities have become increasingly accessible thanks to our dedicated school bus, which allows students to attend regional events, enrichment activities and performance opportunities with ease.

At Quaama Public School, we believe high potential exists in every child. Through tailored teaching, rich learning experiences and targeted extension pathways, we strive to ensure that all students—particularly those demonstrating high performance or giftedness—are supported, stretched and inspired to achieve their personal best.

What is high potential and gifted education?

High potential and gifted education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.

We do this through:

Our high potential and gifted education opportunities

Our students engage with HPGE education in the classroom, in our school, and across NSW.

In our classroom
  • Advanced learning pathways, including accelerated or compacted content.
  • Formative assessment to monitor growth and adapt learning.
  • Supportive learning environments that enable exploration and self-assessment.
Across our school
  • School musicals
  • Music ensembles
  • Sport squads
Across NSW
  • Participation in music ensembles (e.g. State Wind Orchestra, State Choirs) hones our students’ musical skills, discipline and ensemble awareness.
  • The Representative School Sport Pathway and PSSA and CHSSA events enable our students to trial and compete in sports at regional, state and national levels, fostering discipline, commitment and collaboration.
